48. The Bear Shamelessly Speculates on Entries After Le Mans

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Ever since Murphy was told in the pits at Miller that Gabriele Rafanelli could return to the American Le Mans Series as early as Lime Rock, he’s been thinking about the possibilities for the field we might see after Le Mans. So, an e-mail here, an IM there, here a call, there a call, everywhere a call, call…

Runaways will not be Appreciated

First, the “temporary entries.” The Bear’s been told that European – Le Mans Series – entries at Petit Le Mans – and perhaps Laguna Seca – this year depend in part on the state of the championships. Where they are still contested after Silverstone LMS teams will commit to Interlagos, and along with that, some will take advantage of the LMS travel/shipping option that will fund the trip via Georgia. As long as the bus doesn’t leave there for Brazil too quickly, perhaps a few of those will do a “what the heck,” and go try this “cork screw” thing. The problem for Murphy (and for everyone else) is that here, before Le Mans, he doesn’t know what fate might befall our entries at the Nürburgring, at Spa, and at Silverstone. Nor do they. It would be too bad if that bit on speculation about nothing – or about the obvious – was all that the Bear was hearing. It’s not. (more…)

Murphy enlisted the help of his friend, Indy expert Wudie the Wabbit to write The Wudie and Murphy Punter’s Guide to the 91st Indianapolis 500. A click on that title will take you right there.

46. Poop from Utah. Will a Friend Return to ALMS?

Friday, May 18th, 2007

The paddock was the usual noisy place here at Miller Motorsports Park, and after he had a chance to admire this cool silver car in the Dyson Racing paddock – where he learned that the rumored (elsewhere, not by the Bear) visit of a recently retired driver isn’t expected. The English gardener is – or was – in Jacksonville, Florida, and someone just added two and two and got five, it seems.

Elsewhere, he heard that the Tafel team has a handle on this PR stuff, having garnered a major front-of-sports-section bit on the horse and car both. This time it’s about Porsches and ALMS rather than about NASCAR. Kudos from the Bear. Likewise, Murphy’s pretty impressed with Ryan Briscoe’s drive in Indy qualifying, and hopes that Roger and company will ID the Aussie as an important cog in the ALMS team. And Acura’s buddies at Honda do the Indy engines, so the Bear thinks there are stories to be exploited here.  Git on ‘em, guys. (more…)

45. Street Sense, NASCAR, and Ferrari. Oh my!

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

Murphy, Heidi and Her Majesty the Queen watched the 133rd Kentucky Derby on Saturday. We sipped our Mint Juleps, we nibbled on wings and other delicacies, we shed some tears for Barbaro. We cheered on Street Sense, James Tafel’s dark bay colt some now pick to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. The American Le Mans Series has made sure we know that Street Sense is the horsey part of a racing family that includes Porsche team Tafel Racing and driver Jim Tafel, son of Street Sense’s breeder. In telling the story to the other side – the side with a five and a half million households tuned in – the PR wasn’t so effective. They got it right on the broadcast that “Tafel’s son is a race car driver,” and then went on to mention NASCAR three times and Ferrari once. Sorry ALMS. Sorry, Porsche. (more…)
