In this installment, the Bear reviews the best of the season. In the next, he’ll review the worst.

1. Murphy’s spent years pulling for overmatched underdawgs near the front of the American Le Mans Series field. They worked hard and drove well, but wins were all too rare. Then the Porsche Spyder – and Roger Penske – dropped into the series’ lap. IMSA didn’t hesitate. Tim Mayer and his elves used IMSA’s newly-discovered rule-independence to make certain the fans got the show they’ve so long deserved.

2. Murphy admits to being a fan of sundresses – and rain - in the pit lane at Indy. (more…)

68. Bad Nooz Bear

It’s a tradition. In late fall, Murphy reports high hopes in the paddock for the new season. Then reality bites. Last year, it was, with thanks to Steinbeck, The Winter of Our Discontent. This year the Bear steals the title of a favorite flick.

The hedge fund running Chrysler announced that the chicken feed to give the Viper a hand into ALMS GT2 spec won’t happen. Scratch all but one entry, the Feinberg one. Against pro builders like Riley (Corvette) Doran (Ford GT), to say nothing of Weissach and Michelotto, it’ll be tough sledding for the snake. (more…)

Memorable Moments

Here is Murphy’s  contribution to the commemoration of the American Le Mans Series’ first nine years.

  1. At Portland, 2005, “…James Weaver has a 4 second lead over Emanuele Pirro with just under 5 minutes remaining.” Moments later, he runs out of fuel. Portland is just another Audi win. Weaver as walks disconsolately away from the Lola. “Show me a hero and I will write you a tragedy,” said F. Scott Fitzgerald. (more…)
