Whither LMS Prototypes?

Prototypes in LMS. Kruse now. Racing for Thailand? Good grief. What’s next…racing for Grand Fenwick?

If Cytosport is selected for a partial LMS season (doubtful) Murphy assumes it will be on the strength of their Charouz partner, not their own part-time-not-impressive ALMS effort. And one would think Charouz will need to commit to continue after Le Mans, since the Bear can’t see the LMS accepting part-timers when they’re oversubscribed. Unless some of the weird stuff Murphy’s hearing about entry fees and such happens and there’s a revolt. 1848 Europe all over again. (more…)

Rolex Favorites

The two things Murphy likes most about the 24 Hours of Daytona (aside from the fact it’s 24 hours) are, one, it’s just when the Bear’s itching to get out of his cave for more racin’, and, two, he’s got no idea who’s going to win the blasted thing. The Bear’s first 24? Al’s last win. Next? Tony’s Jag-you-ares beat Poor-she. Who saw that coming? In most things, Murphy only knows what someone tells him, and nobody’s told him much of use about Daytona yet. Still, the Bear does have his favorites. He looked at the 25 Daytona Prototype entries and found five he thinks are most likely to be on the podium come Sunday.

01 Ganassi  Franchitti, Montoya, Pruett, Rojas - Lexus / Riley
02 Ganassi  Dixon, Duran, Lloyd, Wheldon – Lexus / Riley
2 SAMAX  Luhr, McNish, Rockenfeller, Zogaib Pontiac / Riley
9 Penske-Taylor Briscoe, Busch, Castroneves – Pontiac / Riley
99 GAINSCO   Fogarty, Gurney, Johnson, Vasser – Pontiac / Riley (more…)

70. Paddock Poop's Prototype Prognostications

Friday, January 11th, 2008

This week’s entry list for the American Le Mans Series’ Wheels Down Winter Test pre-season event threw a few more logs on the fire in determining the 2008 prototype field. Here’s what the Bear’s hearing around the paddock.

Audi will be back, but hasn’t said so. Unrelated to the North American program, Audi is waiting for a sixth LMS race to be confirmed (or not) before announcing the 2008 program. It’ll be two-continents this time, with Joest in Audi Sport (AG) colors in Europe, and Dave Maraj’s squad dressed in the silver of Audi Sport North America on this side of the Atlantic. (more…)

69. The GT Field Begins to Take Shape

Saturday, January 5th, 2008

Murphy told you what he heard in the paddock in the warm fall of the 2007 season. Inevitably, once the leaves are off the trees the best laid plans go astray, so the Bear described the angst of mid December in Bad Nooz Bear. (more…)

Murphy’s Least Favorite 2007 Stuff

Friday, January 4th, 2008

1. GT1 in the American Le Mans Series was a disaster; all the spin in the world won’t make it otherwise. Aston Martin wasn’t obligated to race – lots of others didn’t – but a noisy entitlement attitude invited attention. (more…)
