The Art of Racing in the Rain

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Well, the Bear’s already finished his read, and The Art of Racing in the Rain goes right to the top of his favorite books list!

He loved this book. Let’s face it, racing fiction, unless of the recent genre of NASCAR-romance-pulp fiction variety, or out-and-out humor/parody, doesn’t sell well, and can be pretty dry stuff. Lovable mutt Enzo, however, has given life and delight to Denny, Eve, and Zoë.

Garth Stein (who got the author’s credit, probably because Enzo, like Murphy, lacks the digit definition and opposable thumbs needed to write) has found a voice in Enzo that’s unique in its ability to deliver a detached view of the human condition. (more…)

Murphy’s Travels: Petit and the Peninsula

The Bear did a Petit Paddock Poop, but didn’t much write about his adventures at and around Road Atlanta. AC Guillermo

I attended my first American Le Mans Series race this past weekend at Road Atlanta. Many times I have been on the south side of Atlanta at Bruton’s big NASCAR track, but I never adventured anywhere near Road Atlanta.  After watching dozens of Grand-Am races, I was anxious to compare the two series.

Roger told me the only thing worth watching at Road Atlanta were motorcycle races, and he should know.  He also told me when Brian and Jim eventually buy this place, they will probably make it some kind of retirement village for NASCAR drivers. (more…)

96. Petit Paddock

Monday, October 6th, 2008

Murphy’s back from Petit Le Mans. He had a great time, had his head rubbed for luck on Friday night at Paddy’s by an underdog team owner – who was back to give him a “thank you” pat on Saturday after the finish of a Petit Le Mans that some will call “great” and some will describe as merely “good.”

Obviously, if you’re Audi, Champion Racing (or ASNA – anyway, the guys from Pompano Beach), or Allan McNish, “great” is the right word. If you’re Acura, Duncan Dayton, or Scott Sharp, your descriptive language is something else. (more…)
