Big Apple Grand Prix

Murphy knows many of his readers aren’t buying it, but that New Jersey F1 proposal is very, very real. Those who have seen the details say this is a “street course that works,” meaning, as the Bear understands it, that it’s not a typical “point-and-shoot, see-the-tops-of –the-cars” race track, but rather a good driver’s and spectator’s track. Baltimore has turned out much better than anticipated – so far, anyway – and that will certain add some impetus to the New Jersey street course idea. (more…)

The Abruzzi Archives

It’s not like it’s a big recall. You are dealing with two copies built on left-over Canadian-built race-car chassis. A torch, order some glass, and viola! (The body panels never did fit, anyway.) The bookkeeping makes the Bear a bit crazy, and leaves him wondering how this project can ever produce a competitive race car. Winchester need a part from Hoschton? The Don writes a check in Braselburg, mails it to Winchester, then Winchester writes a check and mails it to Hoschton. Meanwhile, Gordon’s got a consulting job with the Abruzzi at Sebring. Murphy expects he’ll be in charge of the tent flap.

It’s all pretty odd. The Bear remembers a big dust-up 2001 when not enough Bavarian touring cars were built. That led to our first ALMS one-make racing class. (more…)

Murphy’s Word of the Week

Whilst (hwlst, wlst)  While. Conjunction, chiefly British; Middle English, whilest, alteration of  whiles.

Off to the Continent?

A US race team is rumored to be planning a two-car LMS campaign in 2011. Sources say $10 million has been mentioned. The Bear is particularly puzzled by this one, since its principal was believed by some to be one of those nosing around IMSA with a buyout in mind. But it isn’t settled yet, since the LMS plan is promoted internally by a driver and friend of the boss with deep Euro roots, whilst the team manager is “less than committed” to the idea – or so Murphy has heard, anyway. 149. Murphy’s Expected Sebring Entry.

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

It’s time – after much procrastination and with a healthy dose of prevarication – for the Bear to make his first prognostication of the likely Sebring grid. (more…)

Murphy’s projections of the 2009 American Le Mans Series grid have been among the most pessimistic in this silly season. Braselton, and a few scribes close to the Broadway Avenue palace, have insisted all along that there will be “mid twenties” on the grid at every stop, and sometimes more. One IMSA insider said the series expected an “average grid of 30 entries.” At the other end of the range, the Bear quoted one participant who put the likely full-season entries at 18.

Murphy doesn’t want to always play the Grinch, so he dug around a bit to try to find those entries. (more…)
