Murphy’s 2nd Annual Christmas Quiz – Questions 11-20.

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

Here are the answers to the second half of Murphy’s Christmas Quiz. The scoring is underway.

11. What new LMP2 was announced at the 2003 Petit Le Mans?

The Shaw Chassis Engineering SCT 100. An entertaining event that gave the Bear and  others many laughs at Road Atlanta and later at other events where Shaw was a no-show. From the report of the news conference Murphy’s friend wrote for dailysportscar at the time: “Shaw Chassis Engineering, of Mazon, Illinois today announced a “chassis program” based on new technology that will allow competitive ALMS-rule-compliant prototype race cars for as little as $180,000, complete with a 3.4 liter V8 of Shaw Chassis’ own design. Manufacturing of thirty-six chassis is underway, allowing such attractive pricing. Corey Shaw said, “We have several contracts in hand, some from teams, or drivers currently competing in ALMS, for cars to be delivered to be raced at Sebring in 2005. The thirty-six chassis include “some” that are being built for SCCA’s A Sports Racer class (ASR).” In retrospect, the number of lies told by Mr. Shaw is astounding – or perhaps it’s not, considering Al Solaroli, Greg Loles, the Soup Kitchen Guy, and Henri Zogaib. 1. Who were the managing partners of BAM! ?

BAM! a Porsche GT team, was announced in 2003 for the 2004 season; Tim Munday and Peter Baron were identified in the release as owners. “The BAM! team owners are Tim Munday and Peter Baron (right) – Munday as technical director, Baron as business director.” – DSC 3 November 2003. Leo Hindery was listed as a sponsor/driver with his YES Network. We all know that Leo was a significant investor/supporter, which is why Murphy specified “managing” partners. (more…)

179. Speculating and Adding Detail (Riley Revised)

Saturday, December 4th, 2010

In an off-season that’s been frighteningly quiet, the Bear’s been able to keep up with most of the rumors with an occasional Tweet. Here’s some rehash and a bit of new perspective on the stories Murphy’s heard. (more…)

Dyson Racing and Grand Am

Announcements have been written but not released while the last details of an agreement are completed. However, Murphy is pretty sure Dyson Racing (but not its current two drivers) to be on hand at Montreal, and yes, the Bear knows full well that’s on the same weekend as Mosport. Dyson Racing will wrap up the 2010 season involved in both ALMS and Grand Am, as they have before. (more…)

Sebring – Screwing on your Wheels

Falken sent three wheels bounding down the track. One took out the Flying Lizard’s defending champions. Does that trifecta wipe out a previous Robertson Racing record of two stray wheels in a single race?

Sebring – Competence (continued)

All excuses (and resigned shrugs) aside. The fact that the GT2 race was ended nearly five hours before the checkered flag by IMSA rules (or the sloppy implementation of same) is stupid. Murphy thinks the ALMS is in the entertainment business, not just for the ticket-buying public, but for the sponsors of Flying Lizards Motorsports and Rahal Letterman Racing, and the rest, struggling for sponsors, all of them. The Braselburg puzzle palace better figure out how to keep those competitors in the show until they lose (or win) the race through their own efforts. (more…)
